| >> Growth Strategy3-Nationwide contracts boost young firm to $1M-plus in revenue |
| Tony Michael's business plan developed in reverse. When he started Strategy3 Inc., a Beavercreek-based manufacturing consulting firm, three years ago, he expected to do most of his business in Ohio. But with the national economy on the verge of a recession and Dayton's manufacturing industry sliding into a downturn, Michael and his business partner Richard Keely had to look outside of the local market for growth. So they started following leads across the country and overseas and built a client base through referrals and word-of-mouth. Today, Strategy3 does 80 percent of its business outside the Dayton market, in cities such as Chicago and Sacramento, Calif. The company, now at 13 employees and about 40 clients, earned nearly $900,000 in revenue in 2003 and expects to break $1.5 million this year. | Owners of consulting firm say their services, payment method will bode well in a down economy When Tony Michael and Richard Keely first decided in spring 2000 they would quit their full-time jobs and start their own business, the economy still was considered in pretty good shape. However, by the time the two manufacturing managers opened their consulting firm, Strategy3 LLC, in March 2001, the national economy was teetering on the brink of a recession. "The economy wasn't at rock-bottom when we decided to start our business," Michael said. "And after that, emotionally we'd decided to do it, and we had all our ducks in a row." Small and medium manufacturers must watch costs in a down economy, so the decline actually is bringing Dayton-based Strategy3 more business, Keely said. The two-man firm already has seven clients and expects to end the year with 10 customers billed a total of $350,000. The firm is looking to hire two more people, and expects to have 12 to 15 clients with total billings as high as $650,000 in 2002.
